Business News Update

Inflation

Total consumer inflation was 0.3% in September. Consumer prices fell in August.

Annualized inflation rates:

September 1977 - 6.6%
September 1987 - 4.3%
September 1997 - 2.1%
September 2007 - 2.7%

Value Investing 101

A consortium of big private banks led by Citigroup is putting together a massive fund to invest in mortgage-backed securities.

This is a no-brainer. The time to be buying mortgage-backed securities is right now, when the Lithium and Xanax brigades on Wall St. are gloomy and anxious about the mortgage markets. Buy low, sell high. Not vice-versa.

Port Security

After a number of frustrating delays DHS/TSA is ready to roll out that automated system for checking the backgrounds of workers at our seaports. The motivation is to try to help prevent, you know, terrorists from killing lots of people.

Here's a link to a statement from which you can obtain some of the details of the program. The media's accounts of this development were so laden with anti-Bush/DHS agendas they were useless, in addition to being redundant/redundant.

FBC

Fox Business Channel debuted this week.

I haven't watched. I presume I've missed out on lots of T&A. Oh, well, as a fallback there's a Hooters nearby.

Tax Free

The U.S. House voted to extend for another four years the moratorium on state and local taxes on Internet access.

That ban on Internet taxes first was enacted in 1998. The extension thereof easily will be approved in the Senate and then signed into law.

Gray Lady

Jim Addison did a post yesterday (EST) on Morgan Stanley's decision to bail out of the decaying cesspool known as the New York Times. Check it out if you've not done so already; it's a good read.

Holy Fucking Shit Batman!

From Ace!

I am so glad I work in a construction company...we swear all the fucking time! LOL

Good News For Morons: Swearing At Work Boosts Team Spirit And Morale

This comes from a university study so it must be true.

"Employees use swearing on a continuous basis, but not necessarily in a negative, abusive manner," said Baruch, who works in the university's business school in Norwich.

Banning swear words and reprimanding staff might represent strong leadership, but could remove key links between staff and impact on morale and motivation, he said.

"We hope that this study will serve not only to acknowledge the part that swearing plays in our work and our lives, but also to indicate that leaders sometimes need to 'think differently' and be open to intriguing ideas.

"Managers need to understand how their staff feel about swearing. The challenge is to master the 'art' of knowing when to turn a blind eye to communication that does not meet their own standards."

But it’s not all skittles and beer…cursing in front of the boss or customers is still apparently not such a great plan. Still, news like this can only enhance the employment prospects of the majority of people who read this blog.

Scandis are freaking NUTS!!!!

From Ace!

Norwegian Pre-School Teacher & Child Psychologists Agree: Kindergartners Should Be Allowed to "Dance Naked and Masturbate" and Otherwise "Express Their Sexuailty"

But there are some limits:

"But their sexuality must also be socialized, so they are not, for example, allowed to masturbate while sitting and eating. Nor can they be allowed to pressure other children into doing things they don't want to."

Allowing them to whack off of their buddy's hand-turkey drawing is necessary, it is claimed, because it's wrong to limit their sexuality.

But then they claim that four and five year olds' sexuality must be "socialized" to prevent uncouth exhibitions.

If we're going to impose limits on them at all, wouldn't a simple, commonsensical limit be that you can't masturbate in public? I think there's wide acceptance of this form of "socialization of sexuality," even in Norway.

Dirty Filthy Scandis: Oh right, I forgot how much I hate them. And how much you hate them, too, as seen in the comments here.

We have so much hate it's hard to keep track of it all. If only we could bottle it and use it to kill brown people and/or pale people.

Football Game

Yesterday was the game between Dallas and New England.  Dallas lost   Though they did give a very good challenge to New England for most of the game.  They fell apart in the 4th quarter.

I wanted to watch the game but it was blocked out in Phoenix - DAMNIT!!!

It was a very good game overall!  And still very likely a precursor to the Superbowl!

Peace Prize Joke

So, Albatros Gore won the peace <cough> prize <cough>  Why in the hell do we still have that....you would think it has been disgraced enough when Arafish won it or Dhimmi Carter...but no..this year it goes to Albatros Gore.

What a fucking joke.  Global Warming as described by Albatrose Gore and those Enviro wackos are a joke.  The weather has been fluctuating since before the Dinosaurs.  It is plainly hubris to assume that we are the cause of it.  If you really think then that justify the fluctuation of the weather before Man?  Let alone in the other planets like Mars and Venus.

No instead the whole global warming movement is designed to give socialists and other wackos the ability to circle jerk themselves to satisfaction while at the same time trying to guilt people into increasing the power of the government at the expense of individuals.  I truly believe that.  If enviros want to circle jerk themselves go for it...but do it in the privacy of your own houses.  Leave me alone and do not try to take away my freedoms.

Business Week update

From Wizbangblog!

Business News Update

SCOTUS

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments this week in connection with what ultimately will be yet another pro-business, anti-leftist securities fraud decision.

The Court next year will rule against so-called "third-party liability" for securities fraud. Outside accountants and lawyers and investment banks will be shielded from shakedown lawsuits when Enron and Worldcom-style implosions happen to take place.

For the liberal media's version of events you can click to read this AP article.

Cause & Effect

Speaking of courts and judges, Clinton-nominated district court judge Charles Breyer finalized that preliminary injunction against the Bush administration's extra-legislative crackdown on employers of illegal immigrants. Ross Perot and the various conservatives who elected Clinton were unavailable for comment.

Obviously this matter will make its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. That'll be interesting.

CAFTA

Costa Ricans voted to join CAFTA. Ralph Nader wept.

Y-UAW-N

The liberal media cheered out loud for the UAW. Chrysler yawned.

Perhaps the "Fourth Estate" was looking for a catharsis or some sort of moral victory. I don't know. The end result was a foregone (pro-management) conclusion.

There's Gold in Them Thar Ice Packs

Newmont Mining will acquire Miramar Mining, setting the stage for increased gold production in the Arctic Circle.

BTW, there is no better hedge against inflation and a falling dollar than gold.

Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Sallie Mae slapped former suitor J.C. Flowers with a lawsuit. Sallie's jilted and wants Flowers to pay. Flowers won't be sending roses to Sallie. Sallie and her snippy girlfriends . . . oh, wait, sorry.

Here's a link to a Reuters article -- sans agenda -- outlining the aborted takeover of Sallie Mae and the ensuing reprisals and recriminations.

Money + Politics

Rutgers University reported New Jersey's population declined by over 231,000 between 2002 and 2006, the largest population decrease in the country.

That's true, Mrs. McGreevey, elections and thus tax and other policies certainly affect how people live their day-to-day lives. Especially the working classes.

Doubling Down

Speaking of New Jersey, gaming leviathan MGM announced plans to build a huge resort/casino in Atlantic City.

There is no better combination of business demographics, profit margins, and large barriers to entry, than those which apply to vacation resorts and casino gaming.

We have an aging population. Old people have lots of time on their hands.

We've had three separate wealth booms within the past 25 years. With the advent of reverse mortgages and the baby boomers sitting on piles of home equity, plus lower tax rates on stock dividends and cash-value based life insurance products, there are hundreds of billions of extra dollars out there poised to enter the system. Lots of those dollars will find their ways into hotels, resorts, slot machines and blackjack tables. You can bet on it.

The casino business is not like the tech business. It's not as if any Joe or Jane, or Bill or Sergey, can open up a casino resort in their garage or dorm room.

If I were running an investment fund -- which of course I am -- I'd be looking for attractively-priced casino operators. Especially those with strong ties to states in which non-Moonbats hold political power.

A well-run casino business with a low P/E ratio and a low price-to-book ratio is a no-brainer for a long-term investment. Roll those dice, honey.

Stock Markets

Speaking of stocks, the markets have been volatile this week. At various points the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both set all-time record highs.

Incidentally, back in early-2003 you could have purchased contract employer and temporary staffer Manpower for around $30 per share. That was a time during which the liberal media was depressed about the economy, the job markets, GOP control of the Congress and state legislatures, President Bush, the upcoming war in Iraq, etc. Manpower was being sold off in a panic. On Wednesday, however, the company's shares closed at $68.71. As recently as July the stock was trading above $90.

$ 30 - March 2003 - depression in the media and panic selling on Wall Street
$ 90 - July 2007 - investors jubilant
$ 68 - October 2007 - investors manic-depressive; media angry

Morals of the story:

-- Buy low, sell high. Not vice-versa.
-- Being a media/market Lemming is no way to achieve your financial goals.

My day today

Well today was a very uncommon day!

Had a doctors appointment so I didn't go to work until about 11 am. Doctor confirmed what I already knew...I am anemic.  Big surprise. So I have to take iron supplements.

Anyway I got to work around 11 - 11:30 and an hour later I took my boss to the doctors.  On my way to the destination some guy hit my car with my boss and I in it.  We were alright but the guy left the scene!  I got his license plate and reported it to the cops, there were witnesses and it was totally his fault.  As I am talking to my secretary about the accident....HE RETURNS.  So I go up to him and tell him, excuse me..but you hit my car!  He said he didn't even know!  How in the hell do you not know you hit a car!  Well once he saw my damage he did everything you should not do once you get in a car accident.  He admitted complete fault!  I got all of his information and already filed a claim.

Then went to the gym, and finally got home.

Between the shooting and this...what the Hell else is going to happen!

STALKER ALERT!

Yep we had an interesting experience in the chatroom...a first for me!  I was jokingly accused of being a "long distance" stalker!  Should I laugh?

This guy comes in the chatroom asking the typical newbie questions.  So he asked me.."am I a long distance fan of sorts?" and then he continues and says "I was gonna say stalker but I am afraid I would get slapped!"

That is a genuine first!  Though I do have questions how can one be a long distance stalker - wouldn't that be an oxymoron? Oh well...just had to share...this unique experience.  Thanks shaiesto for the new experience.

New Heep Clip!!!

Yesterday (well Sunday night actually) Tasha posted a new Heep Clip!

It was rather deep...so I had to view it a few times to get a decent handle on it.  The key word that seems to bring to my mind is confusion and lack of direction.  This I think is most prominently displayed when she could not get past the greeting.

I wish I knew what she was saying as she was reading the letter at the beginning.  Whatever was in there it seemed to be preoccupying her thoughts and actions in the clip.  It obviously was an important part of the clip's progress.

The part with the dog was funny...LOL almost like it was becoming Tasha's new sidekick.  Symbolic - perhaps.   The part with the pet clips, was good but there was no pics of Tasha and Dishka's pets. hehe.

At the very end we got to see Dishka!   That was nice getting to see the girls together again!

Click here to enjoy the clip!

How about them boys!!!!

Oh yeah...those COWBOYS!!!!! WHOOOOOOO!!!

Undefeated!!!!

I was watching the game as I was doing school work and chatting...and honestly..I thought the cowboys lost.  there was 40 seconds left...Cowboys were behind by 8 pts..I turned off the TV and came upstairs...start talking to Dan again and told him I was bummed by the loss and he told me...he heard they won!  I totally didn't believe him!

And then Steven said the same thing..so I went to www.nfl.com and wow..just wow thats all I could say!  They won 25 to 24!!! DAMN it came down to the last 2 seconds of the game!  WOW what a classic!

See Buffalo has never forgiven Dallas for those two superbowls...especially the one where Dallas scored 52 points!  So yeah Buffalo was looking for payback and they had it..they tasted it...but it was grasped from them in the last two seconds of the game!!!!!!

Next week the ultimate showdown...Dallas vs. the Patriots!!!
