More on the death of the Jews in Mumbai

Again from Jewlicious!

You have to read this:

“Bombay has a long history of terror. I have seen bodies of riot victims, gang war and previous terror attacks like bomb blasts. But this was entirely different. It was shocking and disturbing,” a doctor said… The other doctor, who had also conducted the post-mortem of the victims, said: “Of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks. It was clear that they were killed on the 26th itself. It was obvious that they were tied up and tortured before they were killed. It was so bad that I do not want to go over the details even in my head again,” he said… Corroborating the doctors’ claims about torture was the information that the Intelligence Bureau had about the terror plan. “During his interrogation, Ajmal Kamal said they were specifically asked to target the foreigners, especially the Israelis,” an IB source said… It is also said that the Israeli hostages were killed on the first day as keeping them hostage for too long would have focused too much international attention. “They also might have feared the chances of Israeli security agencies taking over the operations at the Nariman House,” he reasoned.

More observations on India Attacks

From the same Jewlicious post that deserved to be highlighted:

But all that’s changed now. Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg were targeted solely because they were Jewish. Had any of us been in Mumbai the day of the attack, we too would have been similarly targeted by mere dint of our religious affiliation. It wouldn’t have mattered in the least to the cowardly terrorists if we were atheist Jews, or cultural Jews, or left wing peacenick Jews, or secular, LWMO, Reform, Conservative or Reconstructionist. If they called out for Jews and you had the balls to raise your hand, they wouldn’t have asked if your Mom was Jewish or if the Rabbi that performed your conversion was on the approved list of Rabbis put out by the Rabbinate in Israel. They would have targeted you without further question. Now I am not saying that we ought to allow our enemies to define who is a Jew, but what I am saying is that however we define ourselves, at least for the next little while, we are all Chabadniks.

India Attacks

It has been thanksgiving and I have not been online very much other than to check on my classes.  BUT, now I want to talk about whats going on there.  Yet most of the Jewish blogs already have covered it way way way more thoroughly than I.

In case you didn't know there has been an ongoing terrorist attack in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) India.  Guess who was targeted above everyone else....THE JEWS.  Also Westerners.

The Chabad Center in Mumbai was the scene of basically a massacre.  Jewlicious called it rightly that today we are all Chabadniks.   They killed a young rabbi and his wife (their child was miraclously saved by the nanny and is now celebrating is two year birthday).

What can you say in light of this tragedy?  What words can one express?  There simply is nothing one could say.

Those of you wishing to contribute to a fund that will help rebuild the Chabad of Mumbai and benefit the surviving children of Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, may do so by clicking here. It’s not much, but it’s the least we can do. You can read more about Gabi and Rivky at Chabad.org.

Peer Review

Once a year, I have to go through a peer review at UoP.  It is really a sort of nervous time for me because I am being openly evaluated and I guess that is worse than not knowing, ironically enough.   I think it is because I actively know it is happening.  And, what made it even more...well stressful than my previous evaluations is that one of the classes evaluated was one I had taught while I was in Israel.  I know during that time I was not "perfect" or in a normal state where I would observe my classes with the normal diligence I usually have.  (Though I was not in any way shape or form negligent in my responsibilities!)  Anyway, I got the results of my peer review and I did even better this year than my previous year!!!!  HOW AWESOME IS THAT!  Damn....all that worry....for nothing, but that is freaking typical of me.  I usually do really well on matters that stress me out.  When I HAD finals and such and I would be up all night cramming for them...and I would take the exams the next day...I usually aced them!  YAY ME!!!!! WHOOOOOO!!!!!

Eyeglasses

For the first time since I was about ohhh...6 or 7 years old..I am wearing eyeglasses again.  I don't know if I am going to like them or not..but at least I am wearing them.

I didn't even need to get them..but given the amount of time I spend online and reading...it's better that I got them now..when they are not required than in the future when I know they will be required.

November 22 - VI Day!

VI Day!!!!!!! Victory in Iraq!

Mark it on your calendars...and never forget.  Victory in Iraq!!!!

LGF
Zombie

Excerpt from Zombie!!!
___
We won. The Iraq War is over.

I declare November 22, 2008 to be "Victory in Iraq Day." (Hereafter known as "VI Day.")

By every measure, The United States and coalition forces have conclusively defeated all enemies in Iraq, pacified the country, deposed the previous regime, successfully helped to establish a new functioning democratic government, and suppressed any lingering insurgencies. The war has come to an end. And we won.

What more indication do you need? An announcement from the outgoing Bush administration? It's not gonna happen. An announcement from the incoming Obama administration? That's really not gonna happen. A declaration of victory by the media? Please. Don't make me laugh. A concession of surrender by what few remaining insurgents remain in hiding? Forget about it.

Random Thoughts

Sometimes it's really hard to make a decision about something that is absolutely life changing.  There is a comfort in what one currently has.  A familiarity and consistency.  It says alot about how one is leading one's life.  Yet the idea of a challenge seems well..provocative.

What does one do when ones mind is in conflict with one's heart?

There are pros and cons to BOTH courses of action.  How does one weight one's importance?  What is more important stability?   Finances?  Current luxuries?  Or an inner feeling of peace?  Being drawn to the historical and cultural center of civilization?  The feeling of being home and that the feeling of BEING in peace?  Not to mention being able to walk where the ancients walked!

How does one try to resolve a conflict when one's head tells you..dont move..you have a good life. Dont fuck it up.  Yet one's heart clearly says..do it or you will regret that you never tried. Don't second guess the chance you have to do something that your grandfather had the chance...And, that when you do get there....things will line up..you wont be alone and you might find the path that you know is out there for you.  Wherever it takes you.  Also that maybe some of the questions you have about life and my role in it might be answered or at least there would be some clarity.

How does one solve this type of delimma?  What is the right answer?  How does one make this type of choice?  WHAT IS RIGHT and is there a wrong answer?
