Magic Bullets: Early-Stage Sperm Cells May Be Harvested Into Life-Saving Stem Cells
I've never been as proud of my boys.
I'm pretty sure I have it in me on an average Wednesday night to cure Parkinson's in an entire zip code.
A man's testicles might be a source of stem cells to help him fight serious diseases, US scientists have shown. They extracted early-stage sperm cells from mice, then turned them into cells capable of becoming different tissues.
...
The testicular cells do not need to be genetically "tweaked" to behave more like embryonic stem cells, unlike other "adult stem cells" found elsewhere in the body, say the scientists.
...
He listed several illnesses which he hoped could be tackled using stem cell technology, including Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's, stroke, diabetes and even certain cancers.
It is hoped that one day, implanting large quantities of stem cells into tissue damaged by disease could prompt the body to replace it.
There is, of course, a catch:
...He said: "At present, there is an awful lot of interest in this from veterinary circles as a source of stem cells for animal use.
"I can see more problems getting humans to agree to have this done, as it would be a very painful procedure to have them extracted."
It's all ball bearings nowadays. Maybe you boys need a refresher course.

Van Halen Pre-Tour Rehearsals
Penn State Marine says he's pretty sure Dave hit himself in the face with the mic stand in this rehearsal of Beautiful Girls, but I couldn't see it.
I guess they sound pretty good despite the fact that Michael Anthony is out of the band. Their harmonies are ludicrously awful, but they always were. Now that I think about it, it might have been Van Halen that Spinal Tap was specifically parodying in, say, its "Heartbreak Hotel" anti-harmony./
I' m surprised they sound more or less like they used to.
The song is Beautiful Girls - a song I have tried to get one of the guys to make a tribute clip!

The OJ Simpson trial - over 13 years ago was a very unique experience. I believed I blogged about it before and since he is just bound and determined to spend the rest of his life in the slammer, it causes those of us who "lived" through the experiences of his trial to revisit that episode and to try to gain some lessons from that experience - because there was not a day that went by where the news, TV stations and other media did not have their share of commentary - during that time! To say that it was pervasive is an understatement - we were drowning in OJ Coverage from the Bronco chase to the culmination of the Civil Lawsuit guilty verdict.
Hell there were times where I have driven near OJ's place and if I recall correctly there were friends of mine who actually went to the scene of the crime. I think I even wanted to go with them....stupid kids. But in the end I remember quite a bit about the crime, the trial and the verdict.
I also remember the "debate" that spawned from the verdict - can a black man get justice? Did OJ buy his way out of justice? Black vs. White. Is Justice Color blind or only colorblind to those that have money? Why is the black community defending a guy who lived more like a Rich white guy who divorced his black wife and "upgraded" to a white woman?
One of the bloggers I occasionally read - Roger L Simon - today posted some of his reflections how the OJ Trial changed his perception. It is a really interesting read.
Here is part of his post.
It’s hard to believe how the OJ Trial dominated our lives, particularly in Los Angeles, during those halcyon pre-9/11 days, now a long thirteen years ago. It was as if a whole city stood still for the latest news of what Johnnie Cochran and his legal team were up to – whether the glove fit and you must acquit, what the latest dish on that allegedly racist (now celebrity) cop Mark Fuhrman might be, whether LA homicide detective Phillip Vannatter had completely bungled the investigation or where Kato Kaelin cut his hair. And this went on for the better part of a year.
I had had my own very glancing brushes with Simpson – whom I had met at parties and thought, like most people, to be jovial, handsome and harmless - before that night of June 12, 1994 when Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were stabbed to death.
Besides doing my own writing, I was teaching screenwriting earlier that year at the American Film Institute. The students came to my house and I would ply them with cabernet to keep us all distracted. (There’s not that much you can teach about screenwriting – you can do it or you can’t.) One of the students was OJ’s personal assistant and, on my recommendation, worked on a screenplay to star the Juice. One of the things I could teach was how to use your connections – obviously of value in Hollywood. In this case the connection was clear: he was the writer’s boss.

Anyway, I think I have always had a job since I was about 12 or 13 years old. My first job was a paper route. I had it for a few years and if you are not familiar with it, here is a basic description. I had to wake up every day around 4 am because the newspaper company would drop off papers at my house. I would have to fold them put rubber bands on them, load them into these bags and put the bags on my bicycle. Then I would have to ride to where my route was and throw the newspapers to the correct houses (yeah people had problems with that) LOL and then I would go home, rest a bit and go to school. This would go on every day - no breaks for holidays.
My mom was so cool - she would get up almost every morning and help me fold the papers or we would just watch music videos as I folded the paper. back in these days there were 5 or 6 stations that played music videos on TV and Cable. Also, I remember there were times when it was really cold outside about 30 degrees (2-4 degrees celcius), and my mom would just have me load the papers in her truck and she would take me out - then we would go to get breakfast and hot chocolate. Those were nice memories.
But the best memories were just when we were up early early in the morning watching music videos and just talking about anything and everything. How long I thought the route was going to take...and having her help me fold the papers.
This was the golden time of music videos - TBS, USA Network, MTV, VH1, WGN, They all played music videos....Now, videos are sparse for the most part. How sad - My mom would have really enjoyed the VH1Classic Channel....that would easily be her favorite!
