40 years ago today

40 years ago today, David became the Goliath.

40 years ago today, Israel began the 6 day war against Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iraq and throughly crushed them so such an extreme condition that Israel gained the whole of Sinai, Jerusalem, The West Bank, The Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights.

What has changed in the 40 years?  There is a tenuous treaty with Egypt.  There has been somewhat normalized relations with Jordan.  Syria, this very day, is bragging that they they are preparing for war.   Lest anyone doubt, there will be another war, most likely this summer.

The 1967 War, was a continuation of the Israeli War for Independence.  The Seeds were sown on Israel's independence day.  This was just the latest round.  But this round changed everything.  No longer was Israel just fighting for its survival (even though it was).  After this it was clear to everyone that Israel was the big boy in the block.  Israel proved that even going it alone, it would be able to route its neighbors.  Prior to this war, Israel would use all of its resources to survive.  And conversely, after this war Israel would always hold back.  That is what I see as its biggest issue now.  Instead of acting decisively and dealing with the military situation in force now Israel will pull its punches and try to use a velvet glove instead of squashing its opponents.

Until Israel goes back to the framework of fighting for its survival, Israel will continue this lethargic posturing and having its citizens bombed every day both in the North and in the South.  Mini-wars will continue and Israel will suffer repeated and unnecessary casualties in an effort to placate others in the world stage.
