Giuliani rep: Rudy will be the first Jewish president

And you guys were worried he wasn’t religious enough.

Surrogates for three Republican presidential candidates pledged they would move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem if elected.

In a debate Tuesday in New York, campaign representatives for Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney all promised to respect an American law calling for the embassy’s transfer from Tel Aviv. The debate, held at a Manhattan law firm, was organized by the Republican Jewish Coalition.

“I think Jews are smart, so I think they’re going to vote for Rudy,” said Guiliani’s surrogate, Ken Kurson, in response to a question about the candidate’s appeal to Jews who mostly tend to vote Democrat.

Kurson said that like Bill Clinton, who was seen as the country’s “first black president” for his strong support among blacks, Giuliani would be the country’s first Jewish president, said Kurson, noting the candidate’s broad support in America’s most Jewish city.

No wonder Ron Paul’s supporters hate him. No no, just kidding; even I think that’s an unfair knock on the Paulnut. (Well, mostly.) As for Rudy’s alleged “broad support” among Jews, I can’t find any city polls online but a state poll by Quinnipiac last month gave Hillary an 11-point lead. There are no geographic or demographic crosstabs so we don’t know for sure how Jewish voters shook out, but since they’re concentrated in the city and the city always breaks for Democrats (whereas the other counties, especially in the northern part of the state, tend to go GOP), it’s probably safe to say his support isn’t quite as broad as Hillary’s is.

Anyway, file this one away because you may be hearing it again down the road, albeit in whispers. The left’s already alarmed at Rudy’s, ahem, “neocon” foreign policy team. And you know what they say about those “New York money people”…

Update: On second thought, maybe it’s not such an unfair knock.
